Hi all,

In "Hi-Tech" Modesto, California, both of the nurseries (and the pediatric
floors) have special security systems. Each infant has a special monitor (on
wristband or cord clamp) that sets off an alarm if it is dislodged from the
infant or if the child goes past the security doors. There is an elaborate
protocol to take infant patients off the floor for procedures. These
security systems have been in place for several years.

I have dislodged these monitors accidentally several times during exams and
have had several staff coming in quickly to check what was going on.

With this system, "rooming in" is not an issue. So at both hospitals,
infants spend the bulk of their stay in mom's room.

Fortunately, no one has had the nerve to use the risk of infant abductions as
a reason to prevent rooming in.
