I heard Bobbie Phillips, MD, lecture at the LLL of MS/AL conf. last week
(dynamite conf!). Bobbie is the doc who has lectured at ILCA about helping
her hospt. in Boston become Baby Friendly. She really 'gets it' about
lactation. Anyway, she is one of the authors of a soon-to-be-published
paper (in Pediatrics, I think) about analgesic effects of breastfeeding. In
a very well-designed study, she and her team demonstrated (with heart rate
measurements) that pain is reduced during heel sticks if baby is allowed to
breastfeed. She made the point that this is impossible to do while doing
circs, so they use a one-time sucrose pacifier after which paci is thrown
away. Pain is significantly reduced by this method as well, tho not as
significantly as with bfg. Sucking helps restore state behavior, and the
sucrose also appears to have a positive effect.
