Beth,

Last week I taught a bf'ing class to adolescents enrolled in a parenting
class at their high school. Following introductions, I started the class by
showing a videotape of teenage mothers talking about their experiences with
breastfeeding. (I don't know if I can name the product on Lactnet so e-mail
me privately if you want to know the name of the videotape.) I felt that the
videotape was a wonderful way to "break the ice" and introduce the topic to
the group. When the short video ended, I asked the students what they
thought about the video. It stimulated a wonderful discussion on
breastfeeding.
BTW, also, immediately prior to starting the videotape, I passed out a
piece of paper to each of the students for them to write down any
questions/concerns they had while the videotape played. When the videotape
ended, I collected the papers, mixed them up and read the questions after the
students commented about the videotape. It was a nice way to involve the
students, validate their concerns, and clarify misconceptions. I felt that
it was very important to explore their concerns because negative attitudes
and/or fear can be a big obstacle to breastfeeding success for this
aggregate.

Good luck with your breastfeeding class!
