i would be willing to bet that the reasons these babies are losing wt and
getting jaundiced, beyond the normal amts of each, is baby unfriendly
practices at this hospital. you can check the archives as there is much
discussion about what is or isn't normal wt loss. however my point is that i
bet the babies are not bf immed. after birth and continuously rooming in
thereafter. i also bet the bf assistance is poor so that mothers are not
getting good positioning, latch, and milk transfer happening either.
where i work, at the new and improved women's center, the babies regularly
get their first feed at 12 hrs or more, and are tided over with some sugar
water til then. it is pitiful. (yes i am trying to change all this.)
what i would suggest to you is that you educate your cleints well prentatlly
and have them write a birth plan and communitcate it to all staff and docs
prentally and at hosp admission again. you could also asdk to talk to the
manager and nicely point out that this seems to be an epidemic and then ask
about the routines there etc. maybe some of it will change. good luck. sorry
for typos, late at nite.
