Hi, Jamie: I hope you were able to go in and talk to the mom about
her "mind change". She might have been receptive to some instruction (along
the lines of "Did you know...?) on how to nurse discreetly without feeling
the need to "cover-up". This conversation might also have helped her
express her feelings about not only brstfdg but being a new parent. Many
parents don't want all the visitors in the room, but don't know how to
politely make them go away. This is where the nursing staff comes in.
Make us the "bad guys"! "My nurse said...my doctor said...I couldn't have
visitors...". Our hospital makes free use of signage (although one of
these days I'm going to make up some on the computer - currently we use
hand lattered signs) to put on mom's door. "Mom and baby sleeping,
bonding. See nurse before entering." This usually dissuades people from
barging in. Our phone system has a no-call feature that parents can use -
although we seem to have negated the usefulness of that by allowing cell
phone use everywhere in the hospital, except the critical care units.
Too bad brstfdg, again, takes the hit.
