I have a mom and she and I are looking for bf friendly guidelines to augment the diabetic teaching this newly diagnosed IDDM 21-month old toddler has gotten. You will all be interested in the mom's refusal to use juice to bring up a low blood sugar--mainly because he won't drink it but will drink breastmilk easily. She does not want to try to force foods on him. She exclusively pumps since he has Down Syndrome and has never latched despite her extremely determined efforts to gently coax him to breast. So she gave him a couple of ounces of breastmilk, they rechecked his low blood sugar, and voila, it came up to a normal level within 10 minutes. She made believers out of some doubting Thomas'... This works because it is lower in protein than cow's milk, and carbohydrate absorption is more rapid than cow milk due to it's species specific nature.
So anyone with any helpful comments, resources, personal experiences??? Thanks
