Hi Kate,
I went into it assuming and saying I would be an IBCLC. Afterall, why pay the
money, spend the hours preparing, and sit for the exam if you are not certain
you will pass?  Of course at the moment of the exam (2002) and afterwards I
had flashes of panic but, I had no good reason for it. My best prep for the
exam was Linda Smith's exam prep book and I can't wait to shake her hand at
the LLL of CO/WY conference next month and thank her!
I had all the same questions you brought up about other paths and discussed
them with Jan Barger (Hi, Jan, I "met" you on PAM) and she gave me the
confidence to go all the way for the IBCLC.  (I don't know your background,
if you have the hours, etc).  Perhaps she'll chime in with some thoughts on
the meanings and value of other initials.
