The IBCLC from WIC did a home visit on my slow-feeding baby yesterday and
called me with a report. Baby was up to 8 lbs 8 1/2 oz (4 1/2 oz gain since
visit with me on Friday, and 9 1/2 oz gain since hospital discharge 7 days
ago. Still not quite to birth weight of 8 lbs 10 oz, now at 10 days of age.
He had a fairly large initial weight loss, for unknown reason, losing 11 oz
in about 36 hours.) All nipple soreness is gone and latch looked good to
the LC and felt good to mom. The baby has settled into a more normal
pattern in that he now goes 2-3 hours during the day, but starts cluster
feeding around 4-5 pm in the evening. He also wakes quite frequently at
night. He is no longer routinely taking over an hour to feed (except during
the cluster feeding periods.) So mom is now just down to the classic
problem of what to do with the toddler and older child and how to get some
supper while nursing continuously! Dad made supper the last 2 nights which
made a huge difference, of course. We praised Dad and encouraged mom to
hang in there.
I also encouraged her to take the baby to bed with her. She's awfully tired
from jogging up and down the hall. As a mom of 3 breastfed kids myself, I'm
not sure how the non-cosleepers make it through those early weeks. She's
decided to at least try having him in the room with her.
The LC will see them again later this week, but we are hoping the upswing
continues!
