Someone posted that they wish they could pair up every new mom with a happy
older nursing baby. That's exactly what a mom's support group does. The
moms run the group at our hospital - I'm there to hold babies if moms have
to go to the bathroom. An example from last Friday's group. This was this
particular mom's 2nd time coming (her baby is 2 weeks old) and she has had
a very rough 2 weeks - very emotional. Baby gaining weight slowly, milk
supply borderline (hx of breast reduction), and she's just not happy with
breastfeeding, but very motivated. Another mom who has recently started
coming to the group has a chubby happy exclusively breastfed baby. When
she introduced herself, she told the group she had had breast reduction
surgery. The first mom cried out, "so did I!" the 2 of them immediately
sat down next to each other, crying and sharing their stories. I found out
later from the two of them that after the group they went back to one of
the mom's houses and continued their "bonding". I noticed that the mom of
the 2 week old couldn't take her eyes off the 3 month-old and I know she
went home with a lot of hope. We did discuss in the group the
galactagogues the one mom was finding success with and made recommendations
to the other on things she might want to try. To paraphrase one of the
other moms: "This is what a support group is all about!" I could go on
and on, but I'll end it with - I live for the Friday morning support
group. Ends my week on an upbeat note.
