Dear All,
Just wanted your collective wisdom on this issue. Have a mother in my support
group happily feeding her 6 month old baby, no problems at all. Mum must have
knee surgery (having a cadaver ACL ) Orthopedic surgeon has told her she MUST
wean before surgery as the effect of prolactin ( he told her lactating
hormones) circulating in her body loosens ligaments in her body and this will
affect the outcome of her surgery. He has flat out told her that he will not
operate until she weans. I already told her to ask for studies, literature
etc. to back up this claim and advised a second opinion but as is the sorry
state of our health care he is the only doc she can go to in her HMO. I want
to know from anyone on the list if there is any validity to his claim. I know
pregnancy hormones have this effect but I had never heard this one about
prolactin.

Thanks all of you and happy new year.

Elaine Robertson, IBCLC
