During a discussion with a fellow LC here in Israel, the topic of
recertification came up. We both agree that the high cost of becoming a
lactation consultant and maintaining the IBCLC certification is
squeezing some really good potential candidates out of the profession.
Many of us are in private practice and find it hard to come out ahead
despite long hours (unless we resort to selling products, which I
personally dislike.) Very high taxes, insurance (malpractice and
home/office), phone and supplies cut a big chunk out of the gross
income. Unlike doctors who can fit a few patients in per hour, our work
is time intensive. If we charge prices that we really deserve, we will
become an elitest service, squeezing out all but the wealthy. At this
time, LC services are private and one can't get reimbursed by insurance
companies. Unlike hospital based LCs (which there are very few here,)
we have no benefits and have to take care of our own social security and
pension. All conferences, travel abroad, books and materials have to be
paid for out of pocket. I love what I do and am fortunate that I don't
have to support my family from what I make. I know some LCs have given
up the profession because they can't afford to keep it up. I am all for
recertification but the IBLCE is going to have to show some flexibility
and sensitivity to those with limited means.
