I am concerned that the "cult of yeast" has progressed to the point that a
mother a year past weaning is worried that thrush could still be causing her
breast pain. There are a LOT of reasons for breast pain and in my opinion
breast thrush/yeast is way down on the list of probablilities even during
lactation. It happens, but I doubt it happens ANY WHERE NEAR as frequently
as mothers now believe it does. To list a few common causes of breast pain:
a type of arthritis called costochondritis that is sensed in the breasts but
actually is caused by pain in the ribs, cycle-related pain that is connected
to hormonal changes related to the menstual cycle, "trigger zone pain" a
kind of non-cyclical pain that almost always hurts in one area and is
triggered by unknown mechanisms, chronic conditions such as duct ectasia,
larger than normal ductal diameter, trauma related pain. and of course, most
concerning, breast cancer.

This woman needs to be talking to someone who can visualize her breasts with
diagnostic tests (ductogram, mammogram and ultrasound.) She needs to be
reassured that she probably never had yeast in her ducts anyway, and if she
did, unless she has an immune disorder, she shouldn't give it another
thought nor waste any more time in delaying a breast exam that will either
reasure her that her condition is annoying but not dangerous, or IS
dangerous, in which case she can get started on treatment.
