Dear Friends:

In my capacity as LC at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, I
offer an 18-Hour Interdisciplinary Breastfeeding Management Course for the
US, using the official outline from Baby-Friendly USA as the foundation.
I've applied to offer nursing contact hours from the Pennsylvania State
Nurse's Association.

I give one day of the course once a month at the Health Department, and as
many times as I can at facilities around the City.

The course is well-attended and a lot of fun!

Healthy Children offers a course about teaching the 18-hour course.
Healthworkers come to this course ( a full week) to learn about teaching and
take the information back to their communities.

There is no one official 18-20 hour course. This level of training is deemed
essential by the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative for all
maternity staff in Baby-Friendly facilities.

A challenge now is to encourage hospitals to send some housekeeping staff to
the course, along with OTs/PTs, RDs/LDs and nurses, midwives, and
physicians. Just think about the housekeeper, who could spend 15 minutes in
a new mother's room. If this person is of the same cultural background as
the new mother, there is huge potential to reinforce breastfeeding!

warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, BSN, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
craniosacral therapy practitioner
