Without diminishing in any way the calls here to pay especial
attention for other signs of problems in children whose weight gain
is at the lower limit of "acceptable", I want to pass along what were
real "a ha"! words to me from my pediatrician with respect to my own
slow-gaining daughter. I was, against all my efforts not to be,
still nervous about my child's position in the very low percentile of
the charts (+/- 5%ile). My ped's response: "Someone has to be
there!"

We are individuals that make up a population. An average is your
best *guess* of what any given individual might weigh, but the
individual herself will just lie where she does along that spectrum.
Fortunately, we have many different metrics for assessing health.
