We have had this disagreement at our place also. For a while, we even had to
read a statement about epidurals & the fact that there is no evidence that it
interferes with breastfeeding. I generally tell couples that any intervention
has potential side effects. I state that any drug given to the mom will get
to the baby. We know that some drugs interfere with the baby's responses and
ability to breastfeed. There are continuing research studies looking at
various drugs used in epidurals and their effects on the newborn. We don't
have all the information at this time.
