To answer Donna C.'s question of 22 Oct:
IBLCE has two main pathways of qualification for the exam -
1. Bachelor's degree, 2500 hours of breastfeeding practice, 30 hrs of
continuing ed in the three years before the exam.
2. Associate degree or nursing diploma, 4000 hours of breastfeeding
practice, 30 hrs of continuing ed in the three years before the exam.
Donna, what you described in terms of having an "apprentice" sounded OK; do
know that the clerical hours can't count (I expect you did know that).
Completion of the BSC course would allow this candidate to "discount" her
total number of practice hours; a comprehensive lactation consultant
training course of *150 hours or more* can decrease the hours required by 500
hours (i.e. in her case, 2000 instead of 2500). The course must include an
extensive clinical component.
