I write on behalf of a 34 yo mom who is about to wean, though she had planned
to nurse this child for a year... I researched the archives and was
overwhelmed the the hundreds of entries for breast pain - spend many hours
looking though...The case:
Third breastfed child, nursed others approx. 8 months with no problems. This
child is 8 months; exlcusively bf until about a month ago when he started
solids. Mom has approx. C-cup breasts and normal nipples.
All had been going well for this dyad until about 6 weeks ago when she
developed some tenders plugged ducts in the rt breast. When routine
treatment, then antibiotics, sono, mammo, didn't help, surgeon drained the
plugs and that's when the deep breast pain began. Since then, more sonos,
more drainage, heat, full daily dose of Advil, vit E, Evening Primrose,
Celexa. Pain still there.
She said infant nurses 4x/day and as the day goes on, the pain lessens.
Nursing is comfortable; the pain begins after nursing. As we talked more, she
said he sleeps for about 12 hours at nite and breasts are full in am when he
nurses. After that nursing is when the pain begins and then pain tapers as
day goes on. Pain had been confined to right breast but now has begun in the
left breast. However, mother said when she was considering shutting the right
breast down and using only the left she tried to build her supply in the left
side and soon the pain begin in it.!! Today, the pain was so bad by her noon
nursing that she skipped the feeding and cup fed him formula. The breast was
very full by the 4pm nursing and she reported that after the nursing, the
pain was really bad which was not typical in the late afternoon. It appears
that the ducts are reacting to being overdistended and then emptied but how
can that be at 8 months and after nursing 2 other children - the Advil is
not helping any inflammation that is there... what's next? Anyone seen this?
