We rarely use HMF in our Level II Nursery. Although last week we had a mom
deliver 34 wk twins born at 5lbs & 4.12, (doing well) and ped gave parents
instructions to use HMF until they reached 10 lbs each. Parents found this
excessive, and chose not to 'comply.' At their request, I searched for
research based studies on how long to use HMF. I found the following review
of research studies somewhat helpful and shared this study with the ped. It
clarifies only the need for more research.

Reviewers' conclusions
There are no randomized controlled data evaluating clinical outcomes of
calcium and phosphorus supplementation of human milk for preterm infants on
which to base practice recommendations. Further trials should assess the
clinical benefits and potential adverse effects of supplementation of human
milk with minerals. This may best be done in the context of manipulation of
the composition of human milk fortifiers containing multiple nutrients
(carbohydrate, protein, and minerals).

Congratulations to Mothers' Milk Bank of Austin!
Re: a male nurse: When I delivered my son in Austin 6 years ago, I had a
male nurse and a female doc. Worked for me! I hadn't thought of that in
years!
