Hi,
This is my first post to Lacnet. I have been subscribed for just a few
days and am reading all the mail avidly. I am a La Leche League Leader
in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. I have 4 boys and am still breastfeeding
my 3 and a half year old. I read a post today about a woman who was
experiencing sore nipples and tender breasts premenstrually. I have a
good friend who gets this every month and finds it painful to nurse her
toddler at that time and then she gets her period and it passes. I don't
know of any medical references but in my experience it is not uncommon
for women to experience this and it seems to be a "normal" premenstrual
symptom. Some women also experience sore nipples for up to a week or so
at the time of ovulation. I also wanted to say that all four of my boys
have been breastfed and the first one slept 10 hour nights at 3 months.
My second son who is just 16 months younger than his brother didn't sleep
more than a couple of hours in a row until he was almost 5, a year and a
half after he was weaned. He is 8 now and still wakes up most nights,
sometimes he needs company and sometimes he settles himself back to
sleep. It always seems that breastfeeding gets the blame for "poor"
sleeping habits, most adults don't sleep through the night without waking
up. I hope that my comments are of use. Susanna
