I had written a while back about an upcoming TV broadcast about the new formula
additives.
It was a good report regarding the possible bad side effects of the new
additives. The approach was that parents were assuming it would be safe or the
FDA wouldn't allow it on the market. A mom who "couldn't breastfeed" (no
further info given on that statement) had a baby that wound up in the hospital
with dehydration because of the frequent runny stools that were attributed to
the formula additives (after trying for other causes, of course!). They
included a sound bite from Marsha Walker (I guess that must have come from a
network report they probably used part of-I doubt if the local affiliate
contacted her directly). They very briefly mentioned that she was with the
breastfeeding alliance. Other than that, there was no further mention of
breastfeeding as a safer alternative. That was disappointing, of course, but I
did feel that what was said would at least make parents aware of the fact that
you can't automatically trust that what is on the market is "tried and true".
They said the fromula companies declined to be interviewed, but claimed that
they hadn't gotten any unusual amount of complaints.
I suspect that they hadn't received complaints because the formula would be the
last thing parents (and too many professionals) tend to think would be to
blame. After all "It must be safe or they couldn't sell it!" Hopefully,
parents who saw the report and are seeing similar problems in their babies may
now be more likely to speak up. I wonder how many that are giving both formula
and breastmilk have given up breastmilk because it was blamed for the problems
rather than the formula!?

For those of you in WALC, I will bring the video of the news clip to the May
meeting.

Winnie
