Re the discussion on thumb sucking.  In my experience it does not have much to do with successful breastfeeding.   However a lot of babies are thumb suckers in utero and this can give them some knots to untangle when they are born (learning how to breastfeed).  They tend to want to suck the nipple in like spagetti and take some time to gape well.

My second child was a chronic thumb sucker and a happy breastfeeder.  She went on to continue this habit right up to age 12.  She could even do a handstand with her thumb in her mouth!  And by the way, she has lovely even teeth.
