Hi, I'm looking for some information for a mom I'm helping. She has what she
describes as an extra breast under her arm. There is no supernumerary nipple.

Here's the history: During a pregnancy 7 years ago she noticed a ~ 2 inch
mass under her left arm. It had well defined borders and moved freely. The
pregnancy was terminated at 4-6 weeks. Her physician said it was ectopic
breast tissue and was nothing to be concerned about. The mass never went
away.(she thinks it might have gotten smaller but isn't quite sure) When she
got pregnant again and carried to term, the mass increased in size. She had
some "weird sensations" in it in the early days of breastfeeding but nothing
that coincided with let-downs. With her third pregnancy which also went to
term the mass got even larger. She tandem nursed for about 21 months. Her
second child is two and nurses quite frequently. Right now the mass fits in
the palm of her hand. (maybe a B-cup she says) It looks and feels to her like
a breast. The nurse practitioner she goes to for annual exams seems to know
very little about ectopic breast tissue. She could not find any further
information. She also was not alarmed. I found a little in Dr. Lawrence's book
but not a lot. There is no history of breast cancer in her family or any
cancer for that matter. She wants to know if this will resolve itself when her
son weans, if surgery is indicated for reasons other than cosmetic and any
other information she can find on the topic. I realize it is out of my scope
as both a LLLL and a chiropractor to give her a diagnosis or prognosis but we
would like her hcp to be a bit more informed. Anyone have experience with
this?
Thanks,
