The issue, frankly, is that women are bullied by so-called experts like
Furedi into accepting all the blame if breastfeeding is not managed
properly. Ironically, these pundits also call for women to feel ashamed
if they do manage to succeed at breastfeeding despite gross negligence
by their health care providers and overwhelming negative pressure from
popular culture. Professor Frank Furedi, like many before him, uses
guilt to manipulate women into giving up the right to expect
breastfeeding success, and instead forking over their hard-earned wages
for an largely unnecessary, always labor-intensive, low-quality
commercial substitute. When he is successful in shaming women into
becoming passive servants of the formula industry instead of coming into
their own power, he secures the benefits of their labor for the few
wealthy men who run the formula industry. But he does so by robbing
life and health from the women and children of the world.

Shame on him, and shame on a society which allows women and children to
be treated as the legitimate prey of wealthy industrialists.

Arly Helm, MS, IBCLC
