Breastfeeding--Cause of Menopause?

A mom called me today with a problem I had not heard of before.  She is
28 years old and is breastfeeding a 9 month old.  She is experiencing hot
flashes, mood swings, etc.  She saw her gynecologist who told her she was
experiencing menopause symptoms due low estrogen as a result of
breastfeeding.  He has put her on a low dose estrogen which she says has
helped.

I've never heard of breastfeeding causing low estrogen that one
experienced menopausal symptoms.  Any advice?
