Hoping you are not offended by my jumping in on this discussion.....
May I say in Dr Jen's defense that she is WELL aware of all the suggestions
made, although some reminders and new ideas will always be welcome, I'm sure.
Back in the day when we were in "practice" together on the "wild west side" of
Chicago, we had a loosely structured breastfeeding support group at the
clinic. It was pretty free form, flexible in discussion needs and fueled by the
opportunity that the Peer Counselor was there on specific days so even walk-ins
could be seen or have their questions answered. (She also did home visits when
needed.) Things may be very different in a small town in central Illinois,
where she practices now. (I'm fairly familiar with the area and the local
resources but they aren't as accessible as in the city.)Some moms may have
transportation issues, feel shy about asking a breastfeeding question or just think it's
not that important. Bulletin boards, even informative notes or small "did you
know" stuff is good and so is having some literature in the waiting room.
I've been putting old issues of New Beginnings in the pump room at work, used by
employees and patients and they are disappearing and re-appearing on a regular
basis.Copies of various "nursing mother's books" are there as well. LLLI will
send out old copies for a very reasonable fee or free when you place an
order. Even something as subtle as a coffee mug from a breastfeeding conference on
a desk, wearing a button or using a pen that promotes breastfeeding or having
a breastfeeding book on a shelf at the front desk gets some attention from the
casual observer. It may remind or encourage mom to ask her
question......remember, that's how the ABM companies do it!
Great ideas, let's keep them coming!
