When I hear someone describe a baby as "lazy", "doesn't like me", etc in the first hours/day or so, I have a favorite description. I remind the mom (or whoever) that before being born, every need was immediately satisfied and baby didn't need to do anything. After birth the "free ride" is over and they now have to ask for and work for their food. It's like some haven't figured that out yet and may need some gentle guiding and patience on our part. Some adjust to extrauterine life quickly and others still seem to be in a "What happened, where am I?" state.
Now this may not be exactly accurate physiologically, I find it helps parents see their baby more positively and see their role as patiently guiding rather than demanding "adult" behavior and attitudes on the part of their baby.
