I taught this class a few weeks ago, and was surprised at what caught the
nurses interest.
I had wine glasses containing colored water. These glasses were marked: 1st
day, 3rd day, 5th day, 3 months, 5months. They were surprised to find out
just how little milk the baby was getting that first 1-2 days.
They have since calmed down and helped mom to relax knowing that these
first couple days baby is getting small amt. (this is perfectly normal. No
need to supplement) and helped them realize the importance of every 2 hrs at
the breast.
Also used a walnut to help visualize the small size of stomach.
So, they had visual aids (I have to have visual help) teaching them :
small tummy, small amts of milk, so feed frequently!
The nurses who attended repeat this to their patients. It has helped.
(I got the different amts. from pg 107 Bfing and Human Lactation, Riordan
and Auerbach)
