Victoria describes a mother with long-term nipple cracks at the base of the
nipple that started when baby was 15 months old. The suggestions you've
received so far are all excellent. I'd also ask you to look at a possible
allergy to something the baby is eating. eg maybe mother is mildly
intolerant of say dairy or wheat, but she is giving it to her baby and the
combination of mother eating some and the baby's saliva containing the
allergen is just too much.
I had a similar case some time ago - not cracks, just eczema on the
nipples. Toddler started on dairy products which mother only had a little
of - it took several weeks of baby being dairy free before mothers nipples
completely healed, but that was the end of it then.
Dietary exclusion is a pain, but if the other tips you've received don't
work I'd suggest you eliminate the common allergens from both mother's and
baby's diet and see what happens.
Good luck - and keep us informed
