Hi Lactnetters,
Here is a situation I have never seen before in my practice. A mom delivered
a 7lb8oz healthy boy 5 days ago..."slight bilirubin elevation" was the only
other-than-usual she told me. Baby totally bf, (her second bf child). At
age 2.5 days, she noticed blood clots in the baby's mouth, reported it.
Baby's stomach was evacuated and 2 1/2-3 oz. of maternal blood was removed.
"Many tests" were done and baby is fine. Baby was NPO for 24hr on IV's
followed by NG feeds of EBM. Mom is not allowed yet to bf at all, but baby
is being fed now by bottle her EBM. Note: according to the mom, she has
never seen herself any blood coming out of her breast, all milk expressed
following this has been milk only. No one suggested follow-up to her to be
checked out medically. (I did) The above has been related to me by the
mother, no consult, so I am not in touch with her doctor, or the
pediatrician. My concern is the source of the blood in terms of the quantity.
Maybe I am overreacting...but this is not just rusty milk syndrome I don't
think. Any experience out there with this?
