Metformin works by increasing the number of muscle and adipocyte
(fat cell) insulin receptors and the attraction for the receptor.
It does not increase insulin secretion, it only increases insulin
sensitivity. Therefore, metformin is not associated with causing
hypoglycemia. This activity reduces insulin levels by increasing
the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to the effects of insulin by
rejuvenating the response, and restoring glucose and insulin to
younger physiological levels that may cause weight loss and most
certainly a decrease in the body's total fat content. Weight gain is a common side effect of risperidone.
Weight gain with risperidone occurs in up to 5 percent of people. While a
small amount of weight gain (about one pound) is typical during
treatment with risperidone, some people can gain very large amounts of
weight while taking the medication. This weight gain is thought to
increase the risk of diabetes
or other health problems. Now, connect the two.The two drugs seem to have opposite effects on the same metabolic system(s).
