Renate,

Gentian violet plus "all purpose nipple ointment" found in the handout
Treatments for Problems at the web sites:

http://www.erols.com/cindyrn/drjack0.htm

or

http://www.bflrc.com/jn_arts.htm

The gentian violet is used once daily during a feeding, and the "all
purpose nipple ointment" is used after each of the other feedings,
sparingly, and not wiped off. Gentian violet should be used for three
or four days. If the pain is gone, the mother stops it and weans
slowly off the "all purpose nipple ointment". If the pain has not
changed, she should stop the gentian violet and try a little longer
with the "all purpose nipple ointment". If the pain is going, but not
gone after 3 or 4 days, she can continue with the gentian violet a few
days more.

If the above does not work, fluconazole, as mentioned at the web sites
can be used.

The thrush will not harm the baby and if the mother has no pain, there
is no point in treating the thrush. Eventually it will go away.
