In regards to the question of the heart baby who requires fluid restriction
and calorie supplementation...
certain diagnosis may need a fluid restriction, although some doctors are
more strict than others. I see this mostly after certain heart surgeries
for 1-3 months after.
There are some options. Mom can rent a scale and do pre, post weights with
all her feeds. If the fluid rst does not allow enough to meet calorie needs
and growth, we can give corn oil as a medicine or mixed with the milk. I
sometimes will add formula powder to the milk to increase the calories also.
This mom should be sure that the fluid rst is absolutely necessary and the
recs are coming from a pediatrician who specializes in cardiology.
