As Lisa says, it makes a lot of sense that a combination of a baby with a
less-than-stellar latch or suck gets by on the downpour, and when the breasts
over time begin to really depend on the baby's stimulation alone to maintain
a supply level, the supply ratchets down. At this point, one is dealing with
a 3 or 4 month old who has a way of nursing that seemed to be working, and is
firmly entrenched, and suck training is unlikely to be amenable to this baby.
Rachel's idea of undersupply of baby still applies here since this can happen
two ways:
1. baby not offered breast, except on mom's time, or easy -going and doesn't
make real needs known for optimum stimulation and milk transfer ( mom or
baby-driven) , or
2. baby at breast, rapidly feeding off deluge but with less-than-stellar
latch, suck, transfer, therefore a lower level of milk removal overall, and
over time, subtly droppping and the the breasts respond and "where's the
milk?"... Suck becoming less reflexive, more voluntary at this point also
leaves more room for baby to just quit in frustration instead of staying for
second letdown? This of course can lead to a cycle of frustrated mom and baby
and possible increasing level of supplementation, to keep baby happy...
