I like to term baby led feeding as self directed feeding.  
 
My experience is the same as Pat's.  That is why skin to skin has become
part of my assessment tool and part of suggested practice for the mum to do
at home.   Sometimes there is need to consider ways of optimising the
breastfeeding environment so that baby can self-direct, but most of the time
I find baby does it better when they find the breast themselves and feed
when they are ready.
