Hi all,
Well I was not netting for a few days. I did want to mention a few things about
Nuck and other pacifiers. I agree with both Barbara and Leslie. There are a
few times when I suggest the short term use of a pacifier. I have found that it
helps get a tongue off the palate when a finger is not handy. We do not want
the baby to be sucking on his/her tongue. Anyway, years ago I went to a talk
given by a Dr. Smith. He was studying the suck patterns of breastfed babies and
a number of different bottle nipples. Nuck paid for the study. The information
was fascinating, he found that babies could suck on most nipples but they had to
use a bashing motion when using the Nuck. The baby could not elongate the
nipple to create a good suck so they had to use an up and down motion to get the
milk out. Nuck pulled their money for the study so I do not know if it ever got
published. Dr. Smith felt that a slow flowing P_____x nipple could work the
best but that it was a little short. You could see how babies get so much air
from the bottle.
Robin Glass spoke at that time and I became an instant fan. I always try to go
and hear her speak. She has also helped me with a few moms over the years. I
save my best problems for her. I wish we had more people trained in her
techniques.
