Coach Smith here again.

Not all pain is created equal. Pain from exertion, muscle strain and fatigue
is common during strenuous activity involving muscles - including many
sports and birthing a baby. Pain from injury is a very different
phenomenon. Sports coaches and athletic trainers are supposed to be able to
spot pain of injury and get the athlete off the field (out of the pool, away
from the gym) because further activity makes the injury (and pain) worse and
compromises recovery. The trick is identifying which is which.

Normal labor does not injure mothers or babies. An abnormal labor can indeed
injure mother and/or baby and require major interventions, medications and
surgery. The trick is identifying which is which.
