Dear Friends:

I was taught in 1975, that the reason for mandatory eye prophylaxis was that
the infantile blindness rate was so high at the turn of the century (1900s),
that it became a public health problem. I've never researched this.

STDs are an enormous problem in public health today with resurgences of
syphilis and nasty drug-resistant gonorrhea, along with chlamydia, herpes,
HPV and a host of others.

I refused eye prophylaxis at the birth of my second baby (1990), along with
refusing Vitamin K, the newborn bath, having her blood pressure checked, and
the second physical examination (supposed to be done at discharge) because
she'd had one already 6 hours earlier. We went home 6 hours after delivery.

warmly,
Nikki Lee
