Hello,

There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages at breastfeeding
simultaneously twins AND at breastfeeding twins one then another;
I could tell you a lot about it (having created an association dedicated to
breastfeeding of twins may help understand this sentence.....)

Well:

when babies lack of tonus, mainly it is better to breastfeed one then
another; because positioning may be quite difficult (note that it depends
also on how the mom is helped and positioned). It is without taking into
account when both babies are installed and then one of them "slides"....
biggest disadvantage: when one is feeding and the other is ... crying.

but if one lacks of stamina, of strenght, il can be interesting to
breastfeed simultaneously, because the vigorous baby suckles and helps at
the ejection on the other side, so he helps the twin and thus the
breastfeeding and the lactation;
I personnaly remember having said from my own experience: Alexandre saved my
breastfeeding, because he acted really like "droit au but et pas
d'histoire" which could be translated like: "go straight to the point and
don't tell me any tale" versus Maximilien who could not suckle then lacked
of vigor and strenght (now 11 years old, pretty good judoka, tailored like a
rugby-player);

I would quickly conclude (have to pick my children up at school);
it really depends on the situation; one must accept to have tailored
propositions;

There are elements of practical interest in the ILCA's CORE and in the
Breastfeeding Atlas;

Do you speak french? I could send you a diaporama of one of my speeches??
Or I could translate it if you have some time..

because one needs to evocate the disadvantages and advantages of both
situations, with keys depending on each possible situations (very low
stamina baby/babies, baby crying during breastfeed, evolution with the
growth of children...)

Breast regards,

Subject: breastfeeding twins

I would like some advice to give mothers who are
 breastfeeding newborn twins. What are you recommended as far
 as tandem breastfeeding or breastfeeding one at a time for
 the first few weeks. I realize that this is a case by case
 decision. Generally, I find that when mothers try tandem
 breastfeeding in the first few days (<38 weeks, SGA, etc.)
 the babies just do not stay on and suck effectively.
 However, most mothers insist that they only want to tandem breastfeed.

 I would appreciate ANY suggestions and advice.

 Thank you
 Marla, MOM, IBCLC, RN, BSN
