Hi Charity,
Yes, very interesting case. I would definitely be thinking an airway and/or
swallowing issue. Maybe a small submucosal cleft? Some sort of paralysis of
vocal cords (would that affect swallowing?) as a sequelae of vigorous
suctioning? Greenish gums? Could there be some sort of infection in there?
Even though baby is thriving and mom has done a great job of making this
work, I would be very concerned for baby's eventual ability to feed in other
ways, and any undetected airway issues.
Therefore, I would recommend a good ENT and/or speech language pathologist
or OT feeding specialist, or team of these, to figure out what is going on.
I would also caution mom that she is at risk of declining milk production in
the near future.
I would love to know what the outcome is, and what are your theories and
plan of attack?
