FREDERICTON (CNB) - Health and Wellness Minister Elvy Robichaud reminds
pregnant women and new mothers to seriously consider breastfeeding
because of the health benefits to both the mothers and their infants.
World Breastfeeding Week will be recognized throughout New Brunswick
during the week of Oct. 1 - 7.

As stated in the Provincial Health Plan, the government is committed to
the well-being of New Brunswickers by promoting self-sufficiency and
personal responsibility, and supporting initiatives in the community
such as breastfeeding promotion.

Several communities have planned activities to highlight the event
including participation in the Quintessence World Record Breastfeeding
Challenge. New Brunswick women participating in the challenge will join
others throughout Canada and the United States in breastfeeding their
infant on Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. local time.

"The Department of Health and Wellness has long been committed to
breastfeeding, and recent statistics indicate that more New Brunswick
mothers are breastfeeding their infants at birth," Robichaud said.
"Provincial breastfeeding initiation rates have gone from 54 per cent in
1993 to the current 69.5 per cent, an increase of 15.5 per cent. "I urge
pregnant women and new mothers to consider the benefits of
breastfeeding, and I ask New Brunswickers to be supportive of
initiatives that encourage breastfeeding in their communities."

Benefits include:

    * Breast milk contains all essential nutrients needed for a baby's
      healthy growth. It also boosts the baby's immune system.


    * The World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend that infants
      receive only breast milk until the age of six months. Afterwards,
      mothers should add solids to their baby's food intake.
      Breastfeeding is recommended until the baby is two years old or more.
