I was tickled to read (Food Facts, 11-6-95) that humans crave sweets due to
the association of good feelings from being breastfed and the sweet taste of
mother's milk! Nice thought, but the human prediliction for sweets is inborn:
fetuses increase their swallowing rate when a sugary fluid is injected into
the anmiotic sac, but decrease their swallowing rate when a salty one is
injected.
