Jamie-
I couldn't agree w/ you more! As we think about
Family Centered Care, we need to consider the new
family. I can't tell you how many times BF was
delayed, interrupted, or totally dismissed because of
visitors. The moms get worn our, feeding cues are
ignored, and all this hits when the mother is most
vulnerable. I long for the days when only Dad &
siblings were allowed. When and (mostly) why did our
system revert to this parading of mobs of people to
visit the new family as soon as the baby was born?
And it doesn't seem to matter to people as to the time
they come and how long they stay. I've even attended
births where it was hard to move in the room because
it was so crowded. Or where there is a crowd just
outside the door waiting to pounce once the mom has
her legs down. I just don't get it. Visitor can
wait; that baby isn't going anywhere. There are a few
families that are very tight, do gather around but do
not interrupt the mother/baby interaction. But those
are rare.
Just my 2 cents.
