I haven't found very many new C-Section mother's who can do the side-lying
position. We have some night nurses that really try hard to help moms with that
position so they can get some rest, but Dad has to stay awake and observing
as we have a "rule" no babies in bed with Mom while medicated or sleeping. (We
had a baby die in moms arms, unsupervised, after a c-section, "suffocation"
was the cause of death. The nurse found the baby rolled into Mom and totally
blue, Mom was sound asleep, as was Dad.) Usually during the day the mother's
are up and about so we adapt to where they are at the moment to help with
nursing. It takes some creativity to make a "too deep chair" accommodate a Mom for
nursing. Pillows behind her, to sit on, etc. No one asks an LC what kind of
furniture to purchase in a unit! At least not around here. But in the
hospital we do try to teach the side lying when it is appropriate and Mom is
willing. Some moms have trouble learning it early on. We always find that to be a
topic at support groups. I have had two babies in the past many years that
had lots of ear infections and those moms were side lying for all feedings when
at home. Once we did that position for night feedings and total exhausted
times, only, the ear infections subsided.
