Nothing makes a labor and delivery nurse happier than an unmedicated
delivery. Why, because she can do what she was trained to do. She can be
at the bedside, becoming one with that laboring woman. Rubbing her back,
encouraging her when she says she can't go on. Supporting the dad, who
often is feaful when he see's his wife in pain.

It is eerily quite on many labor floors. No moaning no yelling...miss that...then
the sudden cry of a newborn. Wonderful times.

Why do I say this? Because that is what I went into Nursing for. To provide
that kind of care. Not popping in now and then. We don't feel as needed
obviously because of all the technology. I was trained when we even used a
fetoscope to listen to the heartrate of baby because you couldn't always
trust those monitors. Even now when I go to the doctors office it is rare that
they take my blood pressure the old fashion way..stethescope and cuff,
instead its just a machine you push a button for "on". How impersonal we
have become.
I think that this is what drove me in part to becoming an IBCLC. I can still
have what I once lost. Nothing is more rewarding than helping a mom
suceed. When she is tired, sore, sleep deprived, if I can help find that little
light inside her to encourage and bring her back to herself. She can do it.
Then you leave the couplet nursing together on the bed with dimmed lights. A
little piece of heaven.
