Due to AAP revised guidelines Nov 2008 (starting Vit within a few days of birth), our pediatric group at our hospital is considering starting Vit D supplementation in the hospital.  One of the pediatricians and myself feel that this early supplementation is not necessary, tastes terrible to the infants, may play a part in altering the normal progression of development of correct gut flora.
 
Have any of you in hospitals started Vit D before discharge?  I can find plenty of info about formula causing gut flora changes but nothing on a vitamin supplements.  Are any of you aware of any info that I can tap into and take to the peds meeting?
