"I advised the NNP staff and neonatologist that this is not best practice per the HMBANA guidelines which state that mixing milk based formula with human milk decreases lysozyme activity in the milk. They want to know what the difference is between this practice of mixing and the other practice of feeding HM first, followed by formula - doesn't it all mix and effect the gut the same?"

Brenda, I come to this from a different angle----and of course it depends on how plentiful the mom's milk supply is----but to me, if there's a risk of the baby not finishing a portion of the feeding and there would be one drop of breastmilk in the unfinished (therefore discarded) portion, wouldn't it make sense to give him all the breastmilk first? People seem to "get it" when I put it that way.
