Jack,
My advice on starting solids is very similar to yours. I tell moms that
when the baby can sit up, grab the food, and get it into his or her own
mouth, they can be given little bits of whatever the rest of the family
is eating - grains of rice, whole peas, shreds of meat, excepting
(non-human) milk products. Letting baby feed him/herself prevents
excessive amounts actually getting consumed, leaving plenty of room for
what's really important, and fosters developmental skills as well.
