Dear Lactnetters,

I have permission from mom to post her information in hopes of getting some ideas about the cause & treatment of her ongoing discomfort. Her baby is 3 weeks old; birth weight 6 lbs. 4 oz., today's weight 7 lbs. 8 oz. She has been totally breastfed since birth. Mother states that the pain starts during the feeding & continues for about 30 min. afterwards. She describes it as shooting pain in her breast and is only in the area near the baby's chin. No pain of the areola or nipple.

The pain is not enough to stop her from breastfeeding. Baby's latch is good; she nurses both breasts at each feeding for a total of 15-20 min. At the visit baby came off the breast spontaneously, received 78 ml (by ac/pc weights) and was satisfied.

Mother's nipples were elongated & symmetrical. The mother's nipples were pink prior to and after the feeding with no signs of skin damage. There are no signs of thrush in mom or baby. Baby has been examined by her pediatrician twice since being discharged from the hospital and saw no signs of thrush.
