I think my "definition" of medicalized breastfeeding is what the nurses look
for - baby has to feed every two to three hours, if not, then we supplement.
If baby seems hungry after ten minutes at each breast, we supplement. Not
check latch, not assess for swallowing. So many nurses don't really know or
care that there are differences in the first 24-48 hours that treat
breastfeeding like it should be treated after the milk increases. (I refuse or try not to
say "milk comes in") It has been a crummy week with so many women being
engorged because of management as above, even though the LC who was there for
years prior to my being hired is wonderful and against supplementation. We have
so many problems with moms wanting to give bottles thinking that is the way
to "Do both" because they are afraid that they won't be able to get away from
the baby or be able to "share" the care. Sometimes I can be a diplomat,
sometimes not.
Just my 02 and please no flames.
MK
