I got a call from a mom today with a ten day old. The mom is exclusively
pumping, by choice (sigh), and it took a few days for her to build up her
supply. She is now pumping in the 3-4oz range per pumping and began to give
this milk to her infant. Previously, the infant had been fed Similac
Advance. She reported that when she gave the infant the bottle of
breastmilk, which had been stored in the refrigerator before using, the
infant vomited what appeared to be the entire feeding about 5 minutes after
the feeding was complete. She gave her infant a feeding of Similac and there
was no vomiting. The next day, she again gave her infant a bottle of ebm and
again the baby vomited. Infant spits up a little with formula but never
vomits like she does with breastmilk. Mom is taking only prenatals and stool
softener. since the infant is on cow mlk based formula, eliminating diary
sure wouldn't help...Mother says she cleans and sterilizes her equipment. I
encouraged her to continue to pump until I could come up with a plan to solve
this problem. I'm baffled...any ideas?
